The Center for Nonviolent Communication offers a simple explanation of NVC:

"Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is sometimes referred to as compassionate communication. Its purpose is to:

  1. create human connections that empower compassionate giving and receiving
  2. create governmental and corporate structures that support compassionate giving and receiving.

NVC involves both communication skills that foster compassionate relating and consciousness of the interdependence of our well being and using power with others to work together to meet the needs of all concerned.

This approach to communication emphasizes compassion as the motivation for action rather than fear, guilt, shame, blame, coercion, threat or justification for punishment. In other words, it is about getting what you want for reasons you will not regret later. NVC is NOT about getting people to do what we want. It is about creating a quality of connection that gets everyone’s needs met through compassionate giving..."

Who we are

Dedicated practitioners on the Big Island of Hawaii, who teach, practice and counsel using the principles of Nonviolent Communication.

Kathleen

Kathleen Golden, Volcano, Hawaii, practicing and facilitating NVC for 12 years, offers trainings, practice groups, empathy and dialogue circles, individual & couple's counseling. She has a BA in Sociology/ MA in Psychology, with 34 years experience in marriage/ family counseling, Council facilitator/couple's retreats, and a meditation sitting group. Kathleen completed the 2007 NVC Life Program with Robert Gonzales and assisted in his 2008 program. She continues to deepen in the extended NVC Life Community focused on the Beauty of the Needs. 

Andrea

Andrea Pro in Kailua-Kona teaches introductory NVC trainings and facilitates a weekly practice group. Her NVC training has been ongoing since early 2005 and she recently completed the NVC Trainer/Facilitator Program through the NVC Academy. As a member of the leadership team of Hawaii-NVC, she is immersed in practicing NVC skills and consciousness in her work with this statewide community. She enjoys collaborating in designing NVC programs and organizing trainings. She has a B.A. in Anthropology and has owned and operated her own business for 18 years.
